Buying An Older Home? Get A Mold Inspection

Posted on: 24 November 2020

If you are buying an older home, you need to make sure things are working properly. You can do this by getting inspections done on the home. One inspection you need to do is a mold inspection. Below is more information about this so you and your family can get moved into your new home.

Where Mold Is Found

First, look in the bathrooms, as this is a common place for mold to grow. This is because there is high humidity in the bathrooms, which causes moisture to stick to surfaces. This moisture is the perfect breeding ground for mold to grow. You may see mold on the walls and on the ceiling. Look for mold around door frames, on bathtub fixtures, and close to windows.

Other places that may have moisture that allow mold to grow includes leaky areas on the roof and leaky pipes. If there has ever been a flood in the home, there is likely mold if it was not cleaned properly. Mold may be in the home even if you cannot see it. This is because mold can grow on insulation, behind walls, and on the drywall. Mold can even grow on fabrics and carpeting.

Mold Inspection

To inspect the hard-to-see areas, you should hire a mold inspection company to inspect your home. The contractor sent to your home will do a thorough inspection. This may include cutting into walls to inspect drywalls and insulation. They will likely do this if they see that there is mold growing in different areas. They will start in the basement, as this is a common place to find mold. This is because a basement can easily have moisture built up after it rains or from high humidity levels. The contractor will inspect plumbing pipes, the roof, and many other areas.

If mold is found, the mold inspection company will take samples of the mold. One way they do this is by using a spore trap. This uses a sticky surface to capture air, as there may be mold spores in the air. The mold inspection company will send the samples to a laboratory to have them analyzed. The laboratory will identify the type of mold you have in your home. This is because some mold, such as black mold, can be dangerous.

Talk with the mold inspection company and they can give you much more information on how their inspection works.
